AnnotationThis monograph has been simultaneously co-published as the Journal of Gerontological Social Work, vol 41, numbers 1/2 and 3/4. It explores the challenges that face social workers when working with the older community in rural areas, based on the US experience. It is divided into five sections: Rurality and aging; Practice dimensions of social work with rural elders; Special population groups; Special issues pertaining to rural elders; and Training and policy recommendations. It combines studies of sub-groups of older small town and rural dwellers, with attention directed to specific service networks and intervention models. Each chapter contains a review of the literature on the subject that is being considered. Some of the findings are supported by tables and graphs. The book's significance to social workers is that it addresses practice issues to help meet the growing trend of more adults who choose to live and grow old away from cities. (KJ/RH).
