AnnotationThe over 50s are under-represented in the labour market, and age discrimination in the workplace is a significant barrier to the employment of older people. This report examines how successful the Government's programmes and other initiatives (e.g. New Deal 50 Plus) have been in helping older people return to the labour market. As services are delivered locally, the report also looks at how well local agencies understand the barriers to employment faced by older people, and how effectively services are planned. Case studies are presented for three locations: Wembley in the London Borough of Brent; Heanor, Derbyshire; and Newcastle East. Recommendations are made on providing local services to meet older people's needs; setting targets for employing older people; ensuring employment programmes meet older people's needs; and providing training and support.
