AnnotationThis study applied Weiss's theoretical framework (The provision of social relationships, 1974), in order to better understand interpersonal relationships between grandmothers and their young adult grand-daughters. The primary focus for the research was on questions regarding the importance of the relationship provisions, predictors of relationship satisfaction, and variability in importance of closeness and instrumental support. The sample consisted of 48 pairs of grandmothers and granddaughters, where the latter were undergraduates at a Midwestern university. The Furman and Buhrmester Network of Relationships Inventory (NRI) was used to examine the relationships. Results suggest that programmes designed to link generations of women should take into consideration the variability of relationships. (KJ/RH).
