Annotation | The premise for this caregiver skill training intervention was that improvements in caregivers' outcomes could be addressed by expanding their repertoire of effective coping strategies through both telephone as well as in-home skill training strategies. In this study, 71 caregiver-care recipient dyads were randomised into telephone training, in-home training or friendly call (comparison) group. 61 (86%) completed the training protocol and the 12-week outcome assessment. Scores were compared after the 12 weeks (T2) of training and a further 12 weeks without contact (T3). In-home training reduced caregiver burden and distress at T2 and maintained these reductions at T3. Telephone training took longer to reduce burden and distress by T3, but was also associated with greater caregiver attrition. Friendly calls reduced caregiver burden and distress temporarily at T2, but the effects were not carried over to T3. (RH). |
