AnnotationThe validity and reliability of qualitatively derived measures of coping in support group participants with early stage Alzheimer's disease (AD) and brain tumour (BT) conditions is demonstrated using three methods of assessment. Folkman and Lazarus's (1988) 3 problem-focused and 5 emotion-focused coping strategies were coded qualitatively from: transcripts of 34 meetings of 2 AD and 3 BT support groups; participant self-report interviews; and significant-other reports (caregiver interviews). The rank ordering of frequencies of individual coping strategies for AD and BT groups alike was statistically similar across data sources. Adequate reliability and validity of these qualitatively coded measures occurred. Problem-focused strategies - especially seeking or using social support - predominated across data sources. Caregiver reports confirmed that AD and BT participants were good informants about coping when assessed qualitatively. (RH).
