Annotation | There are various factors in people's life histories that may influence their health-promoting behaviour in later ageing. 162 members of the 1925 Terman Study of the Gifted (mean age 86) responded to a postal questionnaire which included questions concerning their positive health behaviour. Adulthood variables were obtained for analysis from the study archives. Cross-sectional analysis showed that health-promoting behaviour was related to perceived health and well-being in later age. In longitudinal analysis "Easygoingness" in adulthood was positively related to positive psychosocial behaviour and positive health practices, and neuroticism was negatively related to positive psychosocial behaviour in later life. Perceived health in adulthood was related to positive psychosocial behaviour, exercise, physical recreation and other positive health practices. Education, perceived health in adulthood, recalled importance in adulthood of success in sports before age 12 and interest in outdoor sport in early adulthood as well as current health problems, were related to exercise and physical recreation in later ageing. Gender played a moderating role in the prediction of positive psychosocial behaviour, with the relationship of self-rated health in adulthood and recalled importance of success in sport before the age of 12 with positive psychosocial behaviour being stronger for men than for women.
