Annotation | Until recently, osteoporosis was an under-recognised disease and considered an inevitable consequence of ageing. However, as studies have highlighted the costs of the disease to society and health services, perceptions have changed. The WHO Scientific Group on Prevention and Management of Osteoporosis met in Geneva in April 2000. The Group's report covers the pathogenesis, epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis, assessment, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, also socioeconomic aspects and the delivery of care and education. The report will be used as a basis for the preparation of a series of practical guides for the management of osteoporosis in primary care. (RH). |
