AnnotationThe main objective of cardiac rehabilitation is to facilitate the patient's own recovery to achieve, as nearly as possible, a normal state of health and independence. This review looks at the literature on the main components of cardiac rehabilitation: cardiac education, physical exercise, social and occupational support, counselling or psychological therapy, and continuity of care from hospital to general practice. The effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation for older patients is discussed, and notes that many early trials excluded people over age 65 or 70 - even though it is particularly beneficial and relevant to older age groups.
