AnnotationThe term 'person-centred care' has its origins in the work of Carl Rogers and client-centred psychotherapy. It has been has been used in the dementia care field since 1988, when Tom Kitwood first referred to person centred approaches, to distinguish from those emphasising the medical and behavioural management of dementia. This paper focuses on literature on the four main elements of person-centred care: valuing people with dementia and those who care for them; treating people as individuals; looking at the world from the perspective of the person with dementia; and a positive social environment in which the person living with dementia can experience relative well-being.
