Annotation | This review examines the relationship between unsteadiness, falling and anxiety, and their combined impact on the lives of older people. It draws on the literature regarding the link between anxiety and balance disorders to suggest possible explanations for observed patterns of association between older people's physical and psychological balance-related problems. The paper thus considers various ways in which unsteadiness, falling and anxiety may be connected. It then reviews what is known about fear of falling, including the causes, consequences and assessment of falling-related fears. Lastly, the implications of therapy are considered. (RH). |
