AnnotationUsing data from a survey of Songzi County in Hubei Province, this article explores the relationship between children's gender and marital status and their provision of old age support to their non-coresiding parents in rural China. The results confirm the significant influence that gender and marital status have on the likelihood of such children giving financial and housework support, or their likelihood of supporting their parents with agricultural labour in peak agricultural seasons. In Songzi, where both virilocal and uxorilocal marriages have historically been accepted and commonly practised, sons and daughters play basically the same role in providing old-age support for their non-coresident parents, as do virilocal and uxorilocal couples. (Virilocal is pertaining to the pattern in which a newly-wed couple takes up residence in the house, village or territory of the husband's family, uxorilocal that of the wife's family.) The article discusses how these findings relate to current and future problems of old age security and son preference in rural China. (RH).
