AnnotationThe "NHS Plan" introduced the term "intermediate care" to health policy in the UK, subsequently refined in the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF). This editorial article notes that "intermediate care" does not imply a specific, well defined type of health care. Rather, the concept arises out of a policy imperative, and with no particular models of service delivery defined. Differences in definitions provided by the British Gerontological Society (BGS), medical subject headings (MeSH), and CINAHL subject headings lead the authors to conclude that imtermediate care "will remain a concept of unfulfilled promise".
