Annotation | Older people can be valuable and valued members of society, but in this country, they are regarded as a burden. There is a perception that, as our population ages, it will put an unmanageable strain on public services, and especially the care system. This short paper notes how a preventative approach to older people's health could reduce the cost of ageing for health services. Attention to issues of isolation and dependency, coupled with the need for a more joined-up approach to prevention are required. This paper is a summary of the case for greater prevention that is made in the Help the Aged report, "Older people: our neglected assets". (RH). |
