AnnotationThis briefing paper draws on research, in particular a national survey of job change and retirement undertaken by CROW in 2003, which identified three groups of workers with differing attitudes to work and retirement: choosers, survivors and jugglers. The paper identifies a number of factors which influence retirement decisions, ranging from feeling valued at work, to personal or domestic circumstances such as health or caring responsibilities. Other factors considered are the notion of "retirement", whether there is a natural age of retirement and how retirement ages are changing, financial considerations, and whether people want to work after retirement.
