Annotation | Debate in the US on anti-ageing medicine has been prompted by a public hearing in the US Senate on 10 September 2001 entitled "Swindlers, Hucksters and Snake Oil Salesmen: the Hype and Hope of Marketing Anti-Aging Products to Seniors" and a subsequent report published by the General Accounting Office. In this and the next issue of Journals of Gerontology: Biological Sciences, scientists from a broad range of disciplines discuss topics associated with the hype and reality behind anti-ageing medicine. Three main topics are considered: the history of anti-ageing medicine; whether ageing is a disease and whether efforts should be made to modify the biological rate of ageing; and varying aspects of the reality of biological ageing, principally how we measure ageing or determine longevity.
