AnnotationThe care of people with dementia has its foundation in risk assessment and risk management. This paper reports on part of an on-going study across three project sites in Britain that explores the management and construction of risk by people with dementia. Here, the initial survey of current practice is described, in which a postal questionnaire was distributed to various statutory, voluntary and independent sector organisations. 46 (25%) were returned. The key results indicate that most organisations had a policy, guidelines or documentation to support their risk assessment, but that the majority of these were not specific to people with dementia, and were derived more from general psychiatry. Moreover, although the involvement of people with dementia in their own assessment was not disclosed in detail, the person-centred, user-involvement agenda is clearly challenging service providers to identify innovative ways of involving people with dementia in their assessment. Several service providers also regard risk management as a positive step that allows the individual a degree of autonomy. (RH).
