AnnotationCarers are an increasingly studied population, but there is little literature on maximising recruitment strategies. The BECCA (Befriending and Cost of Caring) project is a multi-site cost-effectiveness randomised controlled trial, evaluating a social support intervention for family carers of people with dementia (PWD). The aim of the social support intervention used in the BECCA project was to promote companionship and conversation to reduce social isolation. This article describes the challenges encountered and lessons learned in recruiting family carers as trial participants and lay volunteers as befrienders in rural areas such as Norfolk and Suffolk.
