AnnotationThe 6-item Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS) assesses multiple cognitive domains including memory, praxis, language, judgment, drawing and body orientation. This article outlines the development of 42 items and their clinical testing with a multicultural sample of 166 consecutive referrals to a geriatric medicine outpatient clinic in Sydney, Australia. The predictive accuracy of items was then assessed with a random sample of 90 community-dwelling older people stratified by language background and cognitive diagnosis matched for age and sex. The 6-item RUDAS was found to be portable and tests multiple cognitive domains. It is easily interpreted in other languages, and appears to be culturally fair. However, further validation is needed in other settings, and in longitudinal studies to determine its sensitivity to change in cognitive function over time. (RH).
