Annotation | "Transitions after 50", which is funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), is exploring issues such as work, income and early retirement, and this article uses the findings of four of the studies (all published by the Policy Press). P Meadows in "Early retirement and income in later life" (2000) demonstrates that early retirement is a good idea for many on economic grounds. Barnes and colleagues in "Forging a new future: the experiences and expectations of people leaving paid work over 50" (2002) looked at people's involvement in other activities or further worthwhile employment. Research such as that by Chris Phillipson, "Transitions from work to retirement" (2002) comments on the growing differences in people's experiences of life after 50. More pessimistic and suggesting that income inequality will be significant for future retired people, are Bardasi and Jenkins in "Income in later life: work history matters" (2002). Another aspect of their study focused on is the pressures of caring responsibilities (particularly for women). The implications of this research for the social care profession are highlighted, and points for practice suggested. (RH). |
