AnnotationIt is estimated that carers carry out the equivalent of £5.7 billion of caring a year. Therefore, health and social services need to work together to support carers in their valuable and often unrecognised work. The author reviews two pieces of research published by Carers UK during 2001, and which provide insights into the health and social care divide, as well as complementing Carers UK's survey of carers in 2001. The two studies are "Health's forgotten partners? How carers are supported through hospital discharge", and "Without us ... ? Calculating the value of carers' support". Points for practice that are suggested revolve around hospital discharge policies, recognising the integral role of carers, and providing support accordingly. (RH).
