Annotation | It is proposed that at least 50% of care assistants in homes should be trained to NVQ level 2 by 2005. The author reviews the Centre for Policy on Ageing report, "Trained to care? Investigating the skills and competencies of care assistants in care homes" by Gillian Dalley and Michael Denniss, and published in 2001. Attention is paid to the sample of homes, their rates of pay, the content of training, and training costs. Do the measures being taken to raise standards truly address the employment climate in which the care homes sector currently finds itself? (RH). |
