AnnotationCultural differences in the way HIV and AIDS are viewed and treated in developing countries can teach Europeans a lot about how to deal with the disease. Although HIV/AIDS is perceived as predominantly a disease of younger people, one of the three pieces of research reported considers the quantitative evidence of its impact on older people in Thailand (J Knodel et al, in Social Science and Medicine, 2001). That research notes the role of commercial sex venues for Thai men, and the suggestion of a progressive removal of HIV-related stigma. (RH).
