Annotation | Historically, there has been a dearth of services for older people with learning difficulties and their carers. In the light of the White Paper, "Valuing people" (Cm 5086, 2001), this article reviews some recent studies published by the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities (FPLD) in 2000 and 2001, which variously examine housing needs, residential services, and people with learning disabilities who live with ageing family carers. The author remarks that, hitherto, little attention has been paid to the particular needs of people with learning difficulties and their carers. On the evidence of one author (David Thompson), little may change as a result of "Valuing people", because of local authorities' competing priorities and the lack of appropriate skills in the workforce.
