AnnotationIsolation and loneliness are common among older people who are homeless. This report is based on research carried out over 4 years (1998-2002) involving interviews and small group discussions with 160 homeless and ex-homeless older people in London. The purpose of the interviews was to ascertain older people's perceptions of their situation, and their solutions to the difficulties they experienced. The report explores states and events through the life course that may contribute to loneliness, and barriers to alleviating isolation and loneliness. A longer section examines the critical role of activity in alleviating social isolation and loneliness, and in promoting psychological well-being in a way that is responsive to older homeless people's needs.
