Annotation | In 2001, Australia's Department of Health and Ageing released a staff training tool that was designed to detect and manage depression in older people. The view of this article's author was that the training tool had a major omission: a failure to make any reference to "personhood validation" and the lack of clear definition of the word "spiritual". The author suggests four steps to develop a working hypothesis relating to spirituality: defining the function of the human spirit; making contact with the human spirit; giving the process a name; and a map that provides prompts for interaction.
