AnnotationThis study was carried out as part of the 2002 General Household Survey (GHS) and updates information collected in 1987, 1990, 1993 and 1996 on the same topic. Data was collected from approximately 14,800 people aged 16 and over, living in private households. In 2002, 75% of adults had taken part in a sport, game or physical activity in the twelve months before interview. Based on annual participation, walking (46%) was the most popular activity, followed by swimming (35%), keep fit/yoga - including aerobics and dance exercise (22%), cycling (19%), and cue sports (17%). Further detailed data is given on activity by age, hours of participation, and socio-economic classification. A summary is given of the findings and methodology used. (KJ/RH).
