Annotation | Government efforts to extend working life need to take account of the key role that employers play in retirement behaviour. This study by researchers at the University of Kent (Sarah Vickerstaff, John Baldock, Jennifer Cox and Linda Keen) examined how people working for three organisations in the south of England were affected by the interaction of their employers' policies and their own personal choices. The study looks at current retirement processes, barriers to effective retirement planning, employee views on retirement choices, and the merits of flexible retirement. These findings outline the following aspects of the research: the management of older workers and retirement; individual understanding of pensions and retirement policies; choice; and downshifting employment in the transition to retirement. The full report, "Happy retirement? the impact of employers' policies and practice on the process of retirement" is published by the Policy Press on behalf of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) as part of the "Transitions after 50" series.
