Annotation | A major hypothesis of this study was that older people's choice of social comparison targets (upward, downward and lateral comparisons) is not a stable attribute across all domains of functioning. Data were obtained from self-administered questionnaires of 118 community-dwelling men and 158 women aged 65 to 87 in three cities in Southern Alberta, Canada. Results from a step-wise hierarchical regression analysis support the major hypothesis that women's choice of upwards targets to the domains of social relationships and crisis handling, and men's choice of downward comparisons in the domains of physical, organisational, and intellectual functioning is significantly associated with higher levels of well-being, life satisfaction and optimistic outlook. Findings are discussed in terms of their relevance to the work of practitioners. (RH). |
