KeywordsConvalescence ; Convalescent homes.
AnnotationThere has been much focus on the concept of intermediate care (IC) as the way of returning older people home as soon as possible after being in hospital. Convalescence (or recuperation) is generally seen as the first stage in the process of recovery and rehabilitation, but the concept seems to have become rather dated. The author's interest in the convalescent needs of older people led her to investigate the subject through her MSc in Gerontology at the Age Concern Institute of Gerontology (ACIOG), King's College, London. (RH).
