AnnotationHorticultural therapy (HT) is one approach that could be used in providing meaningful activities for people with dementia who are in institutional care. HT involves the use of plant material to achieve measurable treatment goals with special populations. This exploratory study investigated differential responses of people with dementia to three different types of HT activities: cooking, crafts and planting. HT activities were conducted three times a week at an adult day service (ADS) programme over a 9-week period. A modified dementia care mapping (DCM) technique was used to collect observational data for each participant during HT and during more conventional ADS activities at 5-minute intervals. Participants' predominant behaviour and affect at each timeframe were recorded. High levels of positive affect and engagement were observed during all categories of HT activities, but no significant differences were found between the three categories of HT activities. Affect was more positive during HT than traditional activities. The study lends support to the value of HT activities for participants with dementia regardless of the mode of HT used. (RH).
