AnnotationOf the themes in this book, the main one is the value of having older people in true partnership, whereby "partnership" moves from a concept of consumerism to that of citizenship. The book is based on a case study of the South Buckinghamshire EPICS (Elderly Persons Integrated Care System) project, where the authors worked as part of the EPICS team. The book examines the roots of discrimination against older people, and presents the use of a systems approach as a way of managing problems and developing integrated care. The value of modelling in a systems context is demonstrated; and assessment is presented as critical in getting to know the whole person. Other chapters look at: the role of information technology and its standardising function; methods of involving users and their carers in service development; evaluating an integrated care system; new ways of working together for integrated care and how these shape care of older people; and death and dying. Reference is made throughout to the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF), and initiatives around Better Government for Older People (BGOP) and partnership working. [EPICS collection] (RH).
