Annotation | In the West, will an ageing population be robust and healthy enough to contribute to an economy's prosperity, or will it place a strain on services and society? And in developing countries, can the rising numbers of older people be absorbed by the traditional social safety nets of family, or will the effects of industrialisation leave them without adequate pensions and health care? The author's theme is that the reintegration of older people into societies worldwide is vital to our survival. He examines the real implications of ageing, and challenges ageist attitudes. He argues that the accumulated skills and experiences of older people should be used to enrich society, rather than be perceived as a "burden". He makes the case for rethinking our attitudes to population issues, migration, social structure, and employment policy. Some sections of this book have previously appeared in periodicals including the New Statesman and New Internationalist. (RH). |
