AnnotationThe Research agenda on ageing for the 21st century is designed to support implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing 2002, adopted by the Second World Assembly on Ageing held in Madrid in 2002. It identifies six major priorities. Priority 1, relationships of population ageing and socioeconomic development. Priority 2, current practices and options for measuring material security into older age. Priority 3, changing family structures, intergenerational transfer systems and emergent patterns of family and institutional dynamics. Priority 4, determinants of healthy ageing. Priority 5, basic biological mechanisms and age associated diseases. Priority 6, quality of life and ageing in diverse cultural socioeconomic and environmental situations. The agenda has three other sections : critical research arenas (which identifies specific topics for studies of ageing); key methodological issues; and implementation of the research agenda. (RH).
