Annotation | This is a consideration of the formal institutions of the State and the Church of England and the current relationship between them and the need to reform that relationship for the future. This paper argues that the present system of establishment should be reformed to create a greater degree of separation between them. It holds that this not technically disestablishment, as it proposes maintaining the Church's status as the national church in England. However, it advocates removing political control over Church affairs and allowing the same degree of self governance that the Church of Scotland enjoys. Further reforms are detailed. There is a foreword by the Rt Revd Dr Colin Buchanan, Bishop of Woolwich (who advocates disestablishment). The appendix is of summary tables of interview transcripts and there is a selected reading list. (KJ/RH). |
