AnnotationPeople with dementia should always be asked about whether they drive, particularly those with Alzheimer's disease (AD) who have an increased accident rate compared to controls. Establishing whether a patient with dementia is fit to drive can be difficult, since there are no reliable neuropsychological tests to determine at what point he or she is unable to drive safely. The patient's suitability to drive should be discussed with the doctor at an early stage. The authors clarify the role and responsibilities of clinicians, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), carers and the police when dealing with this issue. (RH).
