AnnotationThe author conducted this survey, to find out whether the goals set by the Department of Health (DH) are achievable, and whether primary care trusts (PCTs) and strategic health authorities (SHAs) feel that the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF) is a useful guideline to improve the standard of care for older people. 39% of PCTs and 39% of SHAs responded. Her survey presents background information and evidence gathered from a range of sources on the eight NSF standards. While high proportions of responding PCTs and SHAs felt the NSF to be an effective means of enabling them to deliver a higher level of health care to older people, 53% of PCTs and 27% of SHAs lack the time, staffing and finance to implement the NSF. Her recommendations include provision of an IT package to assist with implementation of the Single Assessment Process (SAP), accompanied by guidance on data protection and sharing. Appendices include answers to Parliamentary questions on hospital admissions for fall-related injuries, scans for suspected strokes, and adverse drug reactions. (RH).
