Annotation | Skill mix is widely accepted as a contributing factor in achieving a high quality of care. This article presents a review of some of the available literature that nursing home managers and commissioners of nursing home services may find useful in determining an appropriate skill mix for such services. The roles of registered nurses (RNs) and health care assistants (HCAs), the proportions of RN and HCA staff, and a range of parameters in calculating appropriate staffing levels are considered. The article concludes, however, that attention should be given to the attitudes, values, education and training of staff, in which RN involvement is pivotal. (RH). |
