AnnotationA broad range of aspects on research, policy developments and examples of good or bad practice are represented in this literature review, which identifies UK, European, North American and Australian literature since 1982. The review focuses on literature relating to social welfare, but also seeks to include other aspects such as public and voluntary services, economics, family networks, housing, social care, health, empowerment, and transport. The review presents policy statements and developments, and focuses on definitions of independence (including older people's interpretations). It presents a two-nation case study, based on interviews with key people in Denmark and Italy - two countries with contrasting welfare regimes, and different social and familial network structures. The review concludes with policy recommendations based on the literature, and outlines research areas which could be explored further in depth in the future. (RH).
