AnnotationShort break services look after a dependent adult temporarily for any period from a few hours to a few weeks. Research indicates that short breaks can improve the health of carers and act as a safety valve in their relationship with the person with dementia. Currently, the amount of short breaks provided to people with dementia and their carers in Scotland is insufficient to meet their needs, and there is a large variation in the levels of local authority provision. This report examines the evidence base for the effectiveness of short breaks; describes policies that prioritise short breaks; maps the volume and range of short breaks currently available; identifies issues in the area; and gives suggestions as to how short breaks can be improved. Innovative examples of short breaks are also given. The report aims to campaign for more short breaks of better quality, and to encourage people with dementia and their carers to make local representations. It also challenges health boards, local authorities, policy-makers, service providers, planners and commissioners to do more to improve short break services. (RH).
