KeywordsOlder men ; Older women ; Social roles.
AnnotationAn overview is presented of gender-related changes that have occurred in some countries and that have an impact on older men and women. The changes identified are: mobility; cultural changes; economic forces; changes in the institution of marriage; opportunities for women outside the home; reductions in illiteracy; the return of adult children to the parental home; and caring for grandchildren. Such changes may challenge traditional norms regarding gender roles, for example the inavailability of older women as carers, and providing care at a distance. The final section identifies applied implications for education and community programmes that will assist countries in the preparation for such anticipated consequences. (RH).
