AnnotationAfter decades of fairly steady decline in workforce participation on the part of middle-aged and older Americans, the participation rate began to level off in 1985. Since then, large numbers of today's workers in the US express the belief that they will be working in retirement, and that earnings will make up an important component of their retirement income. This report examines US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, and reviews many of the recent studies and surveys on older workers. Its purpose is to explore trends in the employment and retirement of older Americans in the past 50 years. It highlights some of the factors behind these trends, and describes where and under what circumstances older people in the US are employed. The author speculates on what the future may hold for older workers; and identifies policies and programmes that do or could encourage participation in the labour force at later ages. (RH).
