AnnotationThe quality is measured of secondary prevention of stroke provided to 8,200 patients admitted with stroke to 235 hospitals in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in April to June 2001. Measurement was by means of an audit tool developed by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Intercollegiate Stroke Working Party. A high proportion of people who have had a stroke have pre-existing untreated cardiovascular risk factors. The evidence for primary and secondary prevention of stroke is increasingly strong. At follow-up 6 months after stroke, a high proportion of patients were without appropriate treatment, or treated risk factors uncontrolled. Major opportunities are being missed for both primary and secondary prevention of stroke. (RH).
