AnnotationA previous report by Derek Wanless, "Securing our future health: taking a long-term view" (2002), set out an assessment of the resources required to provide high-quality health services in the future. This further review focuses particularly on prevention and the wider determinants of health in England; and the cost-effectiveness of action that can be taken to improve the health of the whole population and to reduce health inequalities. It looks at public health policy in recent decades, and its organisation and delivery in England. It considers public health issues such as smoking, health inequalities, falls and physical activity, and how public health evidence has been used. The appropriateness of different methods of economic evaluation to public health are considered, while some principles and practices are suggested that should underpin approaches influencing individual decisions. Government has various levers at its disposal that could be used to bring about behaviour change: subsidies, taxes, service provision, regulation and information. Recommendations made relate to the gaps identified in health education and the evidence base. (RH).
