AnnotationThe Environment Sub-Committee of the House of Commons Select Committee on the Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs in its report on cemeteries in session 2000/01 recommended that there should be a review of burials and cemeteries legislation. This consultation paper examines some of the issues raised by that report, and seeks views on the case for uniform legislation governing the Church of England and the Church in Wales. The case is discussed for change in the way in which burial grounds are provided. The paper considers the need for regulation and standard setting on matters such as burial rights, record keeping and maintenance arrangements. Issues concerning the protection of buried remains and the case for old burial grounds to be re-used are also covered. The consultation exercise forms the initial stage of a review of burial law and cemetery provision. (RH).
