AnnotationPossibilities are explored for improving the care of older people dying in residential and nursing homes. This book draws extensively on two Department of Health (DH) funded studies undertaken at the Open University (OU) in the late 1990s. Central to the OU studies was the concept of the "dying trajectory" - that is, how care is managed from general deterioration to eventual death. The reasons for limited access to palliative cre services for older people with conditions other than cancer are examined. The challenges of caring for dying residents, the constraints facing staff, the needs of relatives and other residents when a death occurs, and the roles of external health workers are examined. Comparisons are made with the US, including the roles which hospices have begun to play in caring for dying residents. The editors conclude by suggesting that relationships and resources are the key concepts to be considered in relation to palliative care needs. (RH).
