AnnotationOn February 10, 2003 the Elder Justice Act, S.333, was introduced in the United States Senate with 18 bi-partisan co-sponsors. The introduction of this legislation marks the first comprehensive federal effort to address elder abuse, neglect and exploitation, and would provide protections and dignity of life to older Americans. As of this date, efforts are under way to introduce a companion bill in the US House of Representatives. This double issue of the Journal of Elder Abuse & Neglect considers the Act in more depth. It includes: statements from its prime sponsors; the history and status of federal legislation on elder abuse; the proposal for an Elder Justice Act; and several brief perspectives on components of the bill from experts in policy, geriatric education, adult protection services, research and law enforcement. The impetus for this Act began in 2001, when the US National Center on Elder Abuse covened the first-ever National Policy Summit on Elder Abuse, which will be considered in the next issue of this volume.
