Annotation | Eminent writers on gender and ageing consider newly emerging areas in this book, which is a follow-up to Sarah Arber and Jay Ginn's 1995 book, "Connecting gender and ageing: a sociological approach". While early work on gender and ageing was dominated by a focus on older women, contributions in this volume emphasise changing gender roles (including the changing nature of masculinity), and changing relationships and forms of partnership in later life such as living apart together (LAT relationships). Other contributions cover: life after work; gay and lesbian family ties over the life course; social well-being of older men and women living alone; living arrangements for widowed or divorced men and women; pension inequalities; the relationship between gender and marital status with advancing age; the influence of older men's partnership status on their social networks and relationships between friends and family; and sleep as a social act.
