AnnotationThe availability of care homes is examined by provider type and by region, with commentary on the size and state of the market. Performance is examined and scored according to 38 National Minimum Standards, falling into the broad categories of choice of home, quality of care, daily life, complaints and protection, environment, and management and staffing. The report notes that the care home sector for older people seems to be going through a period of consolidation. Although the number of care homes has dropped slightly (by 0.4%), numbers of places are increasing. This report, issued under Section 7 of the Care Standards Act 2000, is one of a series looking at specific topics. It is based on registration information up to October 2003 and inspection data gathered during 2002-03, the National Care Standards Commission's first year of operation. (RH).
