AnnotationOlder driver safety is a growing public health concern for which interventions are currently being sought. Statistics show that, compared with other drivers, older drivers suffer a disproportionately high rate of road accident fatalities. Traditionally, traffic safety efforts for the older population have focused on methods to identify unsafe drivers and to enforce driving cessation. Concerns that driver cessation deprives older Americans of their preferred form of transport and has been associated with an increase in depressive symptoms has led to the creation of the Older Drivers Project by the American Medical Association in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Project describes and advocates a more acceptable approach to road safety. The primary objective of this approach involves helping older drivers stay on the road safely to preserve their mobility and independence. This can be achieved by optimising the driver, the driving environment, and the vehicle. Driving cessation is recommended only after the driver's safety cannot be secured through any other means.
