Annotation | This policy framework was developed as a contribution to the Second United Nations World Assembly on Ageing, Madrid, in April 2002. It describes the rapid worldwide growth of the population aged 60+, especially in developing countries. It explores the concept and rationale for "active ageing" as a goal for policy and programme formulation. It outlines determinants for active ageing, for example the physical and social environment, and whether people will enjoy a positive quality of life as they age. It discusses the key challenges associated with ageing populations: disease; disability; providing care; the higher ratio of women to men; inequities; economic aspects; and older people as active participants in society. Key policy proposals for the Assembly are suggested. (RH). |
